Green light for South West rail link Stage 2

Map showing South West rail link stationsThe NSW Government has announced that it will invest $1.3 billion to deliver Stage 2 of the South West rail link - a major expansion of the CityRail network in south-western Sydney.

The brand-new 11.4-kilometre line will link Glenfield Transport Interchange with new stations at Edmondson Park and Leppington, in Sydney's South West Growth Centre.

When complete, the South West rail link will connect thousands of commuters to the city and also provide a link to Parramatta, Sydney's second CBD.

Stage 1 of the link is already under construction and some of the benefits are already being seen, such as the recent opening of a commuter car park at Seddon Park in Glenfield.

Much of the planning work for Stage 2 has already been completed. We look forward to continuing to work closely with Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation to deliver this important piece of rail infrastructure.

Delivered in stages

Work on Stage 1 of the new South West rail link is already under way. Stage 2 is expected to begin by mid 2010 and is due for completion by 2016. Here's what the project involves:

Stage 1

  • A major upgrade to Glenfield Station, including lifts and an additional platform
  • A rail flyover over the South Line to the north of Glenfield Station
  • An upgrade to the transport interchange in Railway Parade
  • An additional 570 car parking spaces.

Stage 2

  • 11.4 kilometres of new twin track from Glenfield to Leppington, including rail flyovers to the south of Glenfield Station
  • A new station and car park at Leppington
  • A new station and car park at Edmondson Park
  • A new train stabling facility west of Leppington Station.
